In one of my recent blog posts, I talked about "less push, more pull" for businesses on social networks. More importantly, brands need to get used to the concept of earning a spot in customers'/fans' feed/stream. I sometimes have to remind myself not to "engage" or respond to every mention of my co because, well, it can seem "creepy." Even if the customer's updates are wide open, it's not an open invitation. Locally, I think @Starbucks does a great job of responding when appropriate or necessary.
